Gillette, Wyo. (AP) – The Campbell County school district board of trustees in Gillette has given first round approval to allowing teachers and other district employees to carry concealed handguns in six rural elementary schools.
The board is expected to give the measure final approval after 3 public hearings.
Supporters says the policy is aimed at the rural schools, where it can take many minutes for law enforcement to respond to any incidents. School district officials say the proposal addresses concerns voiced by the public in a years-long information effort that included hearings and surveys.
The policy requires teachers and other employees to apply for permission from the district superintendent and to have completed training on safely using firearms before being allowed to bring concealed weapons onto school property.
