The Chadron Fire Department was called to a grass fire just north of Regency around 8:50 pm on Wednesday evening.

Fire Chief Branden Martens says crews arrived to find a grass fire around a half acre in size moving north. Crews attacked the fire on the north side and kept it from advancing any further towards the direction of 10th street.

Martens says that 68 hay bales also ignited and fueled the fire but crews again kept the blaze in check.

The Great Plains Fire Information Center says that the “Centennial Fire” is officially listed as contained as of 11:30 am on Thursday at the size of just one acre.

Six crew members stayed on scene overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning, working the fire and combing through any fuel on the ground. Firefighters are expected to be on site for the next few days and the U.S Forest Service will assist as crews work in relief.

Martens says that fireworks are the likely culprit and reminds folks to exercise caution when using fireworks and disposing of them. He reminds residents not to use them in dry places.

Martens went on to say that lightning did move through the area last night and crews will be ready to respond if they’re needed.
