Chadron High Graduation Still On For May 9 – Sort Of

Chadron High School will still hold graduation on May 9th – sort of.

The normal ceremony has been cancelled by coronavirus rules, but Principal Jerry Mack says there’s still going to be a celebration on that day – a virtual celebration highlighted by an online video of each of the 58 seniors receiving their diploma.

Mack says the diplomas will actually be given to the seniors and the videos made in the days leading up to May 9th as they come to the school individually to return their school-issued laptops and complete all needed paperwork for their final checkout.

Mack met recently with the seniors and their parents via videoconference and they almost unanimously said they still want to have an actual ceremony, even if it wouldn’t take place until well into the summer.

The tentative date is July 18 with the administration to make a yes-or-no decision on July 1st. Mack isn’t optimistic about the chances, given the lack of firm information on when it will be safe to again allow large public gatherings.

He points to the notorious 2019 flu pandemic, which had multiple waves of cases and deaths with some cities having their highest death total in the second wave.
