Chadron School Board Gives Final Approval To Budget And Property Tax Levy

The Chadron School last night approved the budget and property tax levy for the new fiscal year that starts next month. Under a quirk of Nebraska law, school starts under the previous year’s budget.

The Chadron school budget jumps from $17.3-million to $19.4-million, but the general fund goes up only $135,000 to $5.9-million.

The property tax rate remains at $1.05 per hundred for a total of $6.2-million, up about $150,000 from the current year because of a $15-million increase in valuation..

Superintendent GInger Meyer says the big jump in the overall budget is misleading because it’s the result of the $1.9-million dollar in federal COVID-19 stimulus funds the district has or is receiving and doesn’t have to be spent right away.

School board President Tom Menke says the board is very pleased with the budget and the way Meyer put it together and laid it out.

The school board held public hearings on both the budget and the property tax request before the regular meeting and no one from the public testified at either.
