Chadron School Board Holding Retreat Tonight

CHADRON – The Chadron school board is meeting for the second time in 3 days today as it holds a non-action retreat this evening in the district offices. Board president Tom Menke says they hold retreats a couple times a year to have a better chance to informally discuss a number of issues.

At Monday’s regular meeting, the board tabled action a pay raise for secretaries and para-professionals until next month’s meeting.

Menke, who initially introduced and then withdrew a motion to adopt the pay package, says the decision to wait a month was to give the board members more time to study it in depth.

The proposal called for a 2.5% increase in base pay plus advancement to the next step on the salary scale for secretaries and Level-1 paras. Level-2 paras received a 2.5% increase at mid-year over concerns about keeping the positions competitive in the local market.

If the proposal is adopted as is, Level 1 paras would start at $11.52 per hour, Para-2s would remain at $13.26, secretaries on 10-month contracts would begin at $11.77 an hour, and those with 12-month contracts would start at $12.02. The entire package would add about $66,000 to the budget.
