Chadron School Board Votes To Auction Off Former Alpha School

The Chadron School Board has passed a resolution declaring the former Alpha School and its roughly 2-acre site as surplus and putting it up for auction with a minimum bid of $50,000.

The resolution leaves it up to Superintendent Ginger Meyer to set the date and other details for the auction.

Alpha School, about 4-miles east of Chadron along Hwy 20 near the Museum of the Fur Trade, has been used primarily for storage since the Chadron district closed all of its rural schools in 2011.

School Board President Tom Menke says Alpha doesn’t fit into the Chadron district’s long-term plans and doesn’t make financial sense for storage..

Menke says high fuel prices are also a factor. He thinks everyone will benefit from selling the school and its 2-acres.

The school district will also use the Alpha auction to also auction off what the resolution calls “miscellaneous items” such as tables, chairs, desks, shelves, pipe, and chain-link fencing. No minimum bid will be set for those items.
