Commercial Drivers License Program At WNCC Helping Meet Shortage

The revamped Commercial Drivers License program at Western Nebraska Community College has successfully produced 19 graduates since its start last fall to help fill a shortage of drivers in the state.

Currently, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer Truck Drivers are the top ranked occupation by demand in the state of Nebraska. That’s according to the state Departments of Labor, Education, and Economic Development.

The five-week training program provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to pass the written and skills state exams needed for a Class A CDL through a mix of classroom time and behind-the-wheel driving in one of WNCC’s fleet vehicles.

The first week is spent in the classroom with the rest actually driving. Students first develop skills on a course set up on a dirt track on the Scottsbluff Campus before moving to public-road driving in the following weeks.

The next classes begin in early January and will continue every six weeks through 2022
