COVID-19 Stimulus Funds Make Draft Chadron School District Budget Misleading

Chadron School Superintendent GInger Meyer presented the school board with her draft budget cover page for the current school year Monday night and it shows a double-digit jump.

The draft budget, which Meyer cautions is very preliminary, goes from $17.3-million dollars to $19.4-million, a 12.6% increase, while the general fund goes up only $135,000 to $5.9-million.

Meyer says the big jump in the overall budget is from the $1.9-million dollar in federal COVID-19 stimulus funds the district has or is receiving..

Meyer says the school board has discussed using the stimulus funds for needed facility infrastructure work, but with no decisions on specific projects or their timing.

The board has until late next month to take final action on next year’s budget. Under a quirk of Nebraska law, school starts under the previous year’s budget – which runs through the end of September when the new budget begins.
