The 27th edition of the Chadron State College Golf Tournament – Don Beebe Classic – is this weekend at the Ridgeview Country Club in Chadron.

Chadron State Foundation development officer Brandon Davenport says the tournament has always been as much about helping long-time friends renew acquaintances with each other and the school as it has been about raising money for CSC sports.

This year’s tournament has 34 teams of 4 golfers entered with 18 holes both tomorrow and Sunday.

As usual, many former Chadron State athletes will be in the tournament – often joining with ex-teammates to form a foursome – there are a lot of family teams.

Davenport says about 60 of the 136 golfer have Chadron addresses, making for a nice mix of locals and visitors.

While the golfing is tomorrow and Sunday, Davenport says tonight has a reception at 6:00 at the course that’s open to those not in the tournament – as is tomorrow night’s $25 a plate prime rib dinner at the Country Kitchen.

Tonight also has a Par-3 Shootout, an elimination-style contest to “hit the green” that costs $10 for 2 shots.

The tournament was begun by and named for Don Beebe, the former CSC football star who started it during his 9-year NFL career as a way to help support the Eagles.

Now the head football coach at Aurora College near Chicago, he’s scheduled to attend the tournament again this year along with his younger brother Dan, who played basketball for CSc before spending 9 years as the head men’s basketball coach.
