Deputies Cleared In Fatal Shooting Of Suspect In May Near Rapid City

The fatal shooting of a suburban Rapid City man by Pennington County sheriff’s deputies in May has been deemed to be a justified use of deadly force by Minnehaha County State’s Attorney Daniel Haggar, the special prosecutor for the case.

The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation on Thursday released a summary of its investigation into the fatal shooting May 14th of 24-year-old Ty Stilwell in Rapid Valley.

According to the DCI, deputies responding to a domestic disturbance call found Stilwell armed with a rifle.

Deputies said Stilwell refused commands to drop the weapon, yelled profanities, then raised and shouldered the gun in the direction of the person who had called 911.

The deputies then fired a total of 10 rounds in Stilwell’s direction, striking him 4 times before he fell to the ground and dropped the gun.
