Extensive Publicity Forces Move Of Trial in Death Of Lincoln Police Investigator

A judge in Lincoln has ordered a change of venue for the trial of the teenager charged with killing a Lincoln police investigator trying to serve a warrant 17 months ago.

The judge found the extensive publicity and media coverage on the death of Investigator Luis “Mario” Herrera would make it impossible for Filipe Vazquez to get a fair trial anywhere in southern Nebraska and moved it to Columbus in Platte County.

Vaszquez was 17 on August 26, 2020, when he allegedly shot Herrera, who was part of a multi-agency task force trying to serve a warrant on Vazquez. Herrera died of his wound 12 days later.

Vazquez is charged with multiple counts, including 1st-degree murder. His trial is scheduled to begin March 7th.
