Firefighters have made solid progress on a large wildfire that began yesterday in the Wildcat Hills southwest of Gering.

Incident Commander Tim Grubbs told KNEB news that as of 6:00 this morning, the fire was estimated at 2,500-acres and 50% contained. About a dozen residences were evacuated as a precaution.

Today’s containment efforts are focused on the north and east edges of the fire with full containment hopefully by the end of the day.

Grubbs says high winds posed major challenges for firefighters before subsiding during the late night hours.

As for public support of the fire crews, Grubbs says there have been lots of donations of water, sports drinks, and snacks.
