Former Box Butte County Public Defender Found Guilty Of Drug ChargePosted by John AxtellDate: January 25, 2021 11:42 amLeave a comment1640 Views Former Box Butte County Public Defender Jon Worthman faces 3-to-50 years in prison when he’s sentenced March 26 after being found guilty of felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. The 53-year old Worthman had a bench trial before District Judge Richard Birch of North Platte in September and Judge Birch finally filed his decision earlier this month. Worthman was arrested in January of last year after purchasing about an ounce of cocaine in a controlled buy. The drugs were found in his vehicles. Court records show investigators said Worthman told them it wasn’t the first time he’d bought cocaine and that he’d accepted drugs in the past in exchange for legal services. Worthman, who’d also worked with the public defenders in Dawes and Sheridan Counties, later resigned as Box Butte Public defender and surrendered his law license before being formally disbarred by the Nebraska Supreme Court in June.
