Former SD Gov Frank Farrar Dies At 94

Former South Dakota Republican Governor Frank Farrar died Sunday at age 92. Services are pending.

Known as the “boy wonder,” Farrar was the youngest person elected state attorney general before being elected governor in 1968 – running unopposed for the Republican nomination and easily winning the general election.

The outcome was reversed in 1970 when he lost his bid for a second term to Democrat Dick Kneip, making Farrar the last elected incumbent governor of South Dakota to lose a reelection race.

Farrar then left politics and focused on what became a highly successful career in banking that led to extensive philanthropy. He was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2006.
