GOP House Members Oust Cheney From Leadership Post On Voice Vote

House Republicans have ousted Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney from her post as the chamber’s #3 GOP leader, punishing her for repeatedly rebuking Donald Trump for his election fraud claims and his role in fomenting the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.

Cheney, daughter of former vice president Dick Cheney had survived a secret ballot vote in January that allowed her supports to avoid the wrath of Trump loyalists, but this closed-door meeting held a voice vote.

Cheney took the House floor last night and remained unrepentant about the actions and statements

She framed her coming expulsion from the House leadership as a turning point for her party and said she would not sit quietly as they abandoned the rule of law.

Speaking to a nearly empty chamber after nearly all the other Republicans left, Cheney warned that Trump “provoked a violent attack” on his own Capitol “in an effort to steal the election,” and then continued to spread his election lies.

She said “Remaining silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the liar,” adding that she “will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president’s crusade to undermine our democracy.”

Trump celebrated her ouster and repeated his call for Wyoming Republicans to vote her out of office next year. At least 6 challengers have filed or announced to run against Cheney in next year’s primary election.
