Hail Heavily Damages Non-Profit’s Building In Porcupine Posted by John Axtell Date: July 13, 2020 8 Views The executive director of the First Families Now non-profit on the Pine Ridge Reservation says its new center in Porcupine and a number of vehicles suffered heavy damage in a Friday hailstorm. First Families Now assists children and families in isolated communities throughout the reservation. Alice Phelps says baseball-size hail shattered windows and damaged the siding and roof of the multi-purpose building scheduled to fully open by the end of the month while the vehicles parked outside received so much damage on top of broken windows and windshields that they’ll likely be deemed a total loss by the insurance customers. Phelps told Black Hills Fox that the insurance adjusters are scheduled to come in this week and determine the extent of damage to the building, which is fully insured with a hail policy. While she expects the loss to be fully covered, she doesn’t know how long repairs will delay the opening of the Porcupine building. The hailstorm hit as Phelps was giving donors from Cool & Dope a tour of the facility. She said the large hailstones began flying into the building after the windows were shattered, forcing her and the others to take shelter in the middle of the hallway to avoid getting hurt.
