The U-S Forest Service expects 100% containment by late afternoon of the Hat Mountain Fire, about 8 miles west of Rapid City and north of Johnson Siding.

Mystic Ranger District Fire Management Officer Josh Morgan says that as of noon, crews had a combination of hand line, dozer line and hose completely around the fire, which was listed at 36 acres. No structures have been lost.

The Hat Mountain Fire was reported at 2:42 Tuesday and Morgan says a quick response and excellent relationships with interagency partners resulted in protecting homes and minimizing the impacts of the fire.

Over 130 individuals responded to the blaze with suppression efforts continuing overnight. Morgan says the 2 SEAT planes have been released and mop-up operations have already begun.

He expects mop-up and monitoring to continue for the next few days to ensure the fire is out, with smoke possible for several days. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
