High Plains Community Development Open House For Latest Project Posted by John Axtell Date: January 16, 2021 434 Views High Plains Community Development in Chadron is celebrating its 26th anniversary with an open house Sunday from 1-4:00 at its latest project, a modular home at 233 N Maple Street. High Plains began in Jan 1995 as the Chadron Community Development Corporationto help provide affordable housing in Chadron, first through the rehabbing of 13 existing homes previously owned by the Chadron Indian Center. A combination of volunteers, professionals, YouthBuild students, and eventual homeowners providing sweat equity worked on the houses, some of which had to be demolished and replaced by modular or stick-built homes. YouthBuild provided most of the manpower from 1998-2012, when its federal funding ended, and High Plains has relied on local contractors for the past 8 years. High Plains expanded its reach over the years with projects in Alliance, Gordon, and Hemingford as well as Chadron and has built or rehabbed more than 70 homes in its 26 years and has grants for 3 more over the next 3 years. High Plains Community Development has programs to provide up forgivable loans of up to $5,000 for closing costs of first-time homebuyers. It is also a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, offering education courses and counseling for first-time buyers on a range of topics.
