The primary election results for the Chadron City Council indicates a large percentage of voters want to see new blood in office.
Although they easily advanced to the general election, incumbents Cheryl Welch and Mark Werner finished back in the pack with the 4th and 6th highest totals in the 8 candidate field.
Taking the most votes was Mark Graves with 739, followed by George Klein with 649 and Shane Shepherd with 500. Then came Welch at 472, Jason Dye at 429, and Werner at 415.
Not making the cut were Teddy Hamar with 223 and Melody Stacy-Sandona with 148. Stacy-Sandona announced last month she was dropping out of the race due to time and job requirements, but did not notify County Clerk Cheryl Feist of her decision.
Klein was appointed to the council last month to fill out the final 8 months of Keith Crofutt’s term, a position that will be on the November ballot for a 2-year term.
If Klein were to choose to run for that seat, he would need to withdraw from the 4-year race.
Since the 2-year position was created after the filing deadline for the primary, Hamar and Stacy-Sandona could file and run for it even though they ran and lost in the primary for the 4-year seats.
