Interim Tag Taken Off SD Women’s Prison Warden

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – The South Dakota Department of Corrections has taken “interim” off Darren Berg’s title as Warden of the State Women’s Prison in Pierre.

Berg was the prison’s deputy warden and the department’s data systems manager when promoted to interim Warden on March 25 following the resignation of Wanda Markland 2 days after 9 women escaped from the prison.

Secretary of Corrections Mike Leidholt says Beg’s leadership has been invaluable to the women’s prison and the department, adding that his “experience and knowledge of everything from programming to policies to best practices with an emphasis on safety and security will continue to benefit the team he is leading and the inmates they supervise.”

Berg in turn says he appreciates being made the permanent warden because he looks forward to “continuing efforts with our great DOC staff and partners to provide an integrated approach to enhance the outcomes of our female population.” The Women’s Prison currently houses around 400 inmates.
