Latest “Click It Or Ticket” Seat Belt Campaign Underway

LINCOLN – The latest edition of the Click It or Ticket national seat belt campaign begins today and runs through the end of the month, a period that includes the Memorial Day weekend.

Mark Segerstrom, administrator of Nebraska’s Office of Highway Safety, says Click It or Ticket focuses on safety education, strong laws, and law enforcement officers saving lives.

The Nebraska State Patrol and dozens of local law enforcement agencies around the state have received grants from Segerstrom’s office to cover the overtime costs of putting more officers on the road during the campaign.

The Chadron Police Department is among the participating agencies, receiving $1,000 to have more officers on patrol at various times with a focus on both seat belt and child safety seat violations. The latest local survey shows less than 60% of Chadron drivers use seat belts.

Nebraska had 249 traffic deaths last year and only 34% of the fatalities who were in vehicles were wearing safety belts. Statistically, more than half of vehicle accidents occur within 5 miles of home and over 75% are no more than 15 miles from home.
