Leaders Urge Seat Belt Use As Latest “Click It Or Ticket” Campaign Ready To Start

The latest edition of the national Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign begins next week and runs for 2 weeks until June 5th, a period that includes Memorial Day.

Nebraska law enforcement, transportation and healthcare officials held a kickoff of sorts yesterday, gathering for a news conference that focused on seat belt usage as the easiest way to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries in traffic accidents.

Nebraska was one of the few states last year with fewer traffic fatalities than in 2020, but deaths are up more than 30% so far this year.

State Patrol Superintendent Colonel John Bolduc told yesterday’s news conference that clicking on a seat belt is “a 2-second action that can significantly increase your safety” since studies show seat belt use reduces traffic fatalities 45%.

Seat belt use in Nebraska has dropped 5 points since 2017, falling from 86% to just 81% – the 3rd-lowest in the nation and almost 10 full points below the national average.

Dozens of law enforcement agencies across Nebraska have received grants from the Nebraska Dept of Transportation – Highway Safety Office to cover overtime costs of putting more officers on the road for Click It or Ticket.

The Chadron Police Department is one of them. Sgt Chet Swanson says the department received enough money for an additional 36 hours of street patrol over the two weeks of Click It or Ticket.

  1. Seatbelt: click it or ticket? Isn’t the seat belt law a secondary offence? Doesn’t this mean a person has to have another violation before they can be ticketed for no seat belts? Maybe I am wrong?
