LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird.imposed an 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew Sunday after two nights of peaceful protests sparked by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis that later turned violent.
During the curfew, only people who had to go to work, seek medical attentio,n or support law enforcement were allowed on public streets or to gather in public spaces.
The curfew was enforced by the Lincoln Police, Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, and Nebraska National Guard.
In ordering the curfew, Gaylor Baird said she fully supported the calls for justice from the largely peaceful and respectful protesters, but that a handful of people who apparently had other agendas committed terrible acts of destruction and violence.
Governor Pete Ricketts issued a statement Saturday condemning the Minneapolis police actions that caused Floyd’s death and the violence in Lincoln and Omaha while praising and supporting the peaceful protesters.
