Chadron Cancels Late Graduation Plan

New Chadron School Superintendent Ginger Meyer wasted no time in making her first major decision on the job as she cancelled plans for a delayed outdoor graduation for the Chadron High class of 2020.

The school board in May set a July 18th date, contingent on coronavirus rules and with the final decision to be made July 1st.

Meyer said the plan developed by high school principal Jerry Mack was rejected by the Panhandle Public Health District, making it smarter to drop the idea rather than revising the plan and running the risk of families making travel plans then having to cancel them at the last minute with another denial.

Meyer says she was also influenced by the reaction to the virtual video commencement that principal Mack had ramrodded.

Chadron isn’t the only district in the region giving up on holding an in-person graduation this summer. The Rapid City Area Schools made the same decision earlier this week.
