PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) – Prosecutors have filed tougher charges against a Pine Ridge man accused of killing another man in a home on the Pine Ridge Reservation last month.
26-year old Colton Bagola was initially charged with 2nd-degree murder in the death of 30-year old Sloane Bull Bear, but a new indictment filed this week boosted it to 1st-degree murder, discharge of a firearm in a crime of violence, and tampering with evidence.
The indictment accuses Bagola of shooting Bull Bear in the back of the head in the early morning hours of Dec 17 after having told several people about “wanting to kill somebody” and “needing to take a soul.”
He fled the scene and law enforcement searched him for several days before family members said he was at his grandmother’s home in Rapid City. Bagola surrendered after a brief standoff with police that saw him barricaded in the house.
