Noem To Push For Expanded State Oversight Of Youth Facilities

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem says she will push for state oversight of privately-run treatment facilities for youth after a long-standing patter of abuse was discovered at one such facility.

The state had only limited oversight of the facility where an investigative report by South Dakota News Watch found that young adults suffered physical, mental and sexual abuse for a decade. .

Noem’s proposal would change how private treatment facilities for youth are licensed and inspected by the state. A “comprehensive list of recommendations” will be introduced in next year’s legislative session.
