HAY SPRINGS – About 600 customers of Northwest Rural Public Power District were without electricity for a little over an hour Wednesday afternoon when the utility was forced to implement an emergency shutdown on all the lines from its Hay Springs and Mirage Flats Substations.
Northwest Rural Consumer Services Director Les Tlustos said the shutdown was needed so crews could make emergency repairs, but did not elaborate on what the repairs were. The power was turned off about 3:45 and fully restored by a little after 5:00.
The outage affected essentially all the utility’s customers north and south of Hay Springs, but also affected listeners of FM 107.7 KBPY because the station’s transmitter is north of Hay Springs and gets its power from Northwest Rural.
Tlustos says the utility apologizes for the inconvenience and appreciates the patience shown by the customers affected by the outage, which occurred with only a few minutes warning.
