PINE RIDGE, S.D. – Oglala Sioux Tribe President Julian Bear Runner was arrested Saturday on the Pine Ridge Reservation by the tribe’s Dept of Public Safety, but no one’s saying yet on what charges.

Bear Runner, in the final year of his term, issued a statement last night saying he was arrested but had not been arraigned yet, leaving him “not able to speak to any charges made against me.”

He also said in the statement that the Oglala Sioux tribal government “is still fully functioning and will continue to do so into the foreseeable future” and that “all government functions will continue as usual” including the tribe’s COVID-19 response.

Bear Runner wrote that “I remain committed to the work that I have taken on to keep the Oglala Oyate safe and prosperous” and that “I will continue to move forward with the health and wellbeing of my Oyate and your best interest in my heart.”
