Panhandle School Closures Extended To May 1st

HEMINGFORD – The closure of all public schools in the Panhandle has been extended another month through Friday, May 1st, with the possibility they will be closed the rest of the school year. The situation will be re-evaluated as circumstances change.

The decision to scrap the previously scheduled return to classes on March 30th was made by the superintendents of the Panhandle districts after consulting with COVID-19 Unified Command.

The superintendents, United Command, and ESU 13 all say the decision to remain closed through May 1st was a precautionary move since there are currently no confirmed cases in the Panhandle.

They are closely watching the COVID-19 situation in Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota with Colorado the biggest immediate threat. Both Wyoming and Colorado had fewer than 2 dozen cases as of Sunday afternoon with all the South Dakota cases in East River.
