Plans Announced For Billion-Dollar Beef Plant South Of Rapid City

     Last Wednesday, a small group of local ranchers held groundbreaking ceremonies south of Hot Springs for a $2-million dollar beef plant handling 25 head per week with 5 to 7 employees.

       Last Friday, the consulting firm of Kingsbury and Associates announced plans for a $1.1-billion dollar high-tech meat processing plant south of Rapid City with 2,500 workers handling up to 8,000 head of cattle per week plus a bison line.

         CEO Megan Kingsbury says the project aims to restore competition in the meat processing industry in South Dakota, creating competition in the free market system in America “right in our backyard.

      Kingsbury gave no timeline for the project, saying only that it’s in the research and development stage..

    • It has to be per week the largest packing plants only butcher 4200 head a day. either way what a way to improve the economy of Rapid City that isn’t tourism driven.
