GERING – The 2020 Platte Valley Companies Monument Marathon and Half Marathon in Scotts Bluff County is still on for September 26th, despite COVID-19 limits.
The Monument Marathon Steering Committee held a news conference yesterday with members saying they feel confident that they can put on another quality event in spite of the challenges as they work with public health experts to follow directed health measures and create a safety plan.
The PVC Monument Marathon is the largest annual fundraiser for the Western Nebraska Community College Foundation, which supports students, facilities and programs at WNCC. It’s brought in over $400,000 in its first 9 years.
WNCC Foundation Executive Director and Marathon Race Director Jennifer Reisig expects around 300-350 participants this year, even though only about 150 have registered so far. Last year drew 536 participants from across the country, including some of the nation’s top runners
The Steering Committee and event sponsors are also holding a Health Expo at the Gering Civic Center the day before the races that will, in part showcase goods and services from the local area.
