RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) – Rapid City Mayor Steve Allender says he understands the need to allow peaceful George Floyd and Black Lives Matter protests downtown, but denounces any violence or acts to incite those who are peacefully assembling.
Allender said yesterday that the city received a good deal of cooperation from organizers over the first 3 days of protests, but that an escalating pattern of problems then began – made worse by counter-protesters who appear to be intentionally trying to agitate the protesters.
Allender specifically pointed to individuals who, starting on Tuesday, have driven around in pickups adorned with Confederate flags and other symbols found offensive by the protesting groups. He said the counter-protesters are doing it just to make the other angry – and that it’s working
