Saturday Fundraisers Successful

Organizers of two food-related fundraisers Saturday in Chadron and Crawford were very pleased with their results.

Chadron Public Schools Band Director Joe Rischling says the program’s annual Rib Sale saw more than 300 people buy ribs or make a donation with the result that about 350 racks of ribs were sold.

At a price of $28 per rack, the band program brought in over $9,800 dollars and Rischling says he still had about 30 racks left Monday that have been frozen after being cooked on Saturday. Those are for sale at the same price by contacting Rischling.

The other fundraiser was a chili cookout at the Crawford Fire Hall held by the Crawford High School Girls Basketball team for the families of Hattie Hanks and her daughter Rylee Hanks Downs, who were killed in a traffic accident last month.

Coach Rick Barry says the free-will donation event brought in $14,871.50 to help cover funeral expenses for Hattie and Rylee, and for medical and related costs for Rylee’s infant daughter Ellianna, who survived the accident but with serious injuries.

Rylee Hanks was one of the top all-around female athletes in Crawford High School history with basketball arguably her best sport.
