SD Impeachment Committee To Meet Next Week

Loading

The South Dakota House special committee that will decide if impeachment proceedings are brought against Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg will meet for the second time next Tuesday and Wednesday.

The 9-member committee has hired Rapid City attorney Sara Frankenstein, an expert in legislative and governmental affairs, to serve as its legal counsel – in part because impeachment proceedings have never been brought against a South Dakota state official.

Ravnsborg pled No Contest in August to a pair of driving infractions after hitting and killing a pedestrian near Highmore in September 2020. He never appeared in court and received no jail time, only about $4,700 in fines and penalties.

Ravnsborg insists he was driving in the middle of the highway but investigators contend he was on the shoulder.

Select committee member Jon Hansen says he doesn’t know what the committee might recommend, but believes it will largely depend on where Ravnsborg’s car was when he hit 55-year old Joe Boever.SD
