SD Legislative Committee Advances Bill Legalizing Recreational Pot And Limiting Medicinal Pot

The South Dakota Legislature’s Adult-Use Marijuana Study Subcommittee has advanced a proposed bill legalizing recreational marijuana use by adults while repealing much of the state’s new medical marijuana law.

The bill from the Subcommittee, which has been studying the issue since June, is recommending people over 21 be allowed to purchase up to 1 ounce of cannabis for recreational use.

Most aspects of the medical marijuana law that voters passed last year would be limited, but provisions will remain for people under 21 to use medical pot.

To become law, the bill would still need to be cleared by a pair of legislative committees, passed by the full Legislature next year, and finally signed by Governor Kristi Noem.
