SD Moves To 10-Digit Dialing On Sunday

Loading

The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission is reminding everyone today is the last day callers in the state can make local calls without using the 605 area code.

10-digit dialing begins statewide tomorrow.

The change was needed because South Dakota is one of 36 states that uses 988 as the first 3 digits of some phone numbers, but 988 will be the site of a new emergency number.

The National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline is scheduled to go live next July.

By requiring use of the area code for even local calls, the state is making sure people won’t accidentally call the crisis lifeline.
