SD Women’s Prison Warden Resigns After Escape, COVID-19 Case


PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – The warden of the South Dakota Women’s Prison in Pierre has resigned abruptly following the escape of 9 inmates after another in their unit tested positive for COVID-19.

Wanda Markland offered her resignation and left the position on Tuesday with an interim warden now running the prison. Four of the escapees have since been apprehended, 3 on the Crow Creek Reservation.
