Shootout Leaves Gunman Dead, State Trooper Wounded

The Nebraska State Patrol says a trooper was wounded and a suspect killed in an early-morning shootout Wednesday in the south-central Nebraska village of Juniata.

The Patrol says the shooter was 35-year old Brooks Hack, who’d recently moved to Juniata. The name of the trooper, who was treated for a wounded arm and released, has not been released.

The incident began with a 911 call about 10:15 Tuesday night from a woman about domestic violence at a home in Juniata.

She said she was Hacker’s girlfriend and that they had been having an argument when it turned physical. She said she was able to flee into the backyard and make the 911 while Hacker was shooting in her direction.

Responding officers established a perimeter and surrounded the house, with several law enforcement vehicles hit by shots from Hacker.

The NSP SWAT Team was activated, but Hacker continued to fire – hitting the one trooper about 1:30. Finally about 2:30, tear gas was fired into the house at the same time that Hacker came out carrying a gun.

A SWAT Team member fired one shot and fatally wounded Hacker, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The trooper has been placed on administrative leave under State Patrol policy.
