State Reaches $479,000 Settlement In Suit Over 2017 Prison Murder Of Scottsbluff Inmate

Nebraska has agreed to pay $479,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by the family of a prison inmate from Scottsbluff who was strangled to death in 2017 by his cellmate because he was “talkative.”

The suit was dismissed last week under the settlement.

The family of 22-year old Terry Berry Jr had argued the state was responsible for his death by putting him in the same cell as Patrick Schroeder, who was serving a life sentence for murder.

Berry was nearing parole when he was made Schroeder’s cellmate. Schroeder later pleaded guilty to killing Berry and was sentenced to death.
