The Nebraska State Patrol trooper shot and killed an armed suspect Saturday afternoon in St Paul, about 20 miles north of Grand Island.
The Howard County Attorney has requested the State Patrol Special Investigations Team to review the incident, which also included members of the Howard County Sheriff’s Office and the St Paul Police Department.
The Patrol says the incident began about 12:30 with a call to the sheriff’s office about a disturbance between 2 neighbors in St Paul and one of them firing a gun.
All 3 agencies had arrived on the scene within 15-minutes and began searching for the individuals involved. A few minutes later, a group of officers found 80-year old John Vogel holding a rifle near a garage.
A state trooper repeatedly ordered Vogel to drop the gun, but instead of obeying Vogel raised the weapon. The trooper then fired twice, hitting Vogel both times.
Officers on scene immediately rendered emergency aid to Vogel. He was then taken by ambulance to the Howard County Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. No others were injured in the incident.
