Survey Says: Most Residents Want To Cancel Sturgis Rally This Year Posted by John Axtell Date: June 08, 2020 18 Views STURGIS, S.D. (AP) – A survey by the Sturgis City Council has found that most locals want this summer’s 80th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally postponed due to the coronavirus. The city mailed 3,290 surveys to residential addresses and more than 60% of those responding wanted the rally suspended. The city council will make an official decision next Monday on whether to go forward with hosting the rally, scheduled for Aug. 7-16, and will hear a presentation from rally officials at a special council meeting tonight. The Sturgis council has already met with a wide-ranging list of entities on the idea of canceling this year’s Rally including state and local health agencies, local campgrounds and hotels, law enforcement, and the South Dakota Dept of Tourism. Sturgis City Council member Terry Keszler calls the decision an unprecedented one, telling KNBN NewsCenter1 that “no matter what the vote is, there are going to be many people happy and many that are not, adding that “nobody has a crystal ball in this situation.” Rally officials say local campgrounds say they will be open during the rally period, regardless of the city’s decision on postponement.
