Traffic deaths on roads and highways in Nebraska are down in 2021 when compared with recent years, especially those involving motorcyclists.
As of Friday, the state had recorded 126 traffic fatalities compared to 154 at the same time last year.
Most of the drop came from motorcycles, with only 8 deaths this year and 23 a year ago. Nebraska averaged 20 motorcycle fatalities by August 27 from 2016-2020.
Bill Kovarik, administrator for the Nebraska Dept of Transportation Highway Safety Office, says education may be a big factor. He says more motorcyclists are taking training classes and he believes those classes are paying off.
