Trooper Injured In Chain-Reaction Crash Near Chappell

A Nebraska State Trooper received minor injuries Wed afternoon when his patrol vehicle was involved in a chain-reaction accident on Interstate 80 near Chappell while investigating an earlier accident.

The State Patrol says the first accident occurred Wed morning about 8:30 when a semi hit an overpass near Mile Marker 80. The driver was taken to the hospital in Julesburg, Colo, with minor injuries.

The trooper and a number of Nebraska Dept of Transportation vehicles responded to check on the bridge and help with cleanup. Just before 11:00, a pickup pulling a trailer lost control in the crash area and hit one of the NDOT vehicles.

The collision caused a chain-reaction of multiple agency vehicles with one eventually hitting the trooper’s pickup. He was inside and was also taken to the Julesburg hospital for medical clearance, which he received.

All the NDOT were unoccupied and there were no injuries. The 2 accidents closed I-80 eastbound for about 2 hours. The Deuel County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the crash investigation.
