Two Fires NW Of Crawford Controlled In Less Than 2 Hours Sunday

      Quick response by local and federal firefighters yesterday morning resulted in 2 fires a short distance apart north of Crawford contained and controlled within two hours.

The Great Plains Fire Information Center says both fires were held to 1-acre and the cause for each remains undetermined. 

    The Pike Fire and the Walleye Fire were both in the area of the ghost town of Orella, about 17 miles north of Crawford, 10-miles south of the South Dakota state line, and southwest of Strawsack Butte near the Dawes-Sioux County line..

     The Walleye Fire was reported at 11:07, contained by federal crews at noon, and officially controlled at 1:00. The Pike Fire was reported at 11:51, contained by local firefighters within 10 minutes and controlled at 1:00.
