Two Unrelated Unattended Dawes County Deaths Saturday Ruled Natural Causes

Dawes County Attorney/Coroner Vance Haug has determined two, unrelated unattended deaths on Saturday were from natural causes.

69-year old Calvin Coomes of Chadron was found about 3:40 and 97-year old Jean Drinkwalter of rural Dawes County was discovered around 5:00.

Mr Coomes was found in his yard by a family member shortly after mowing before an approaching thunderstorm. Chadron police responded and called Haug.

He says a review of interviews with witnesses – including medical personnel, medical records, and physical evidence at the scene led him to conclude Mr Coomes died of natural causes.

About the time the Coomes investigation was wrapping up, Ms Drinkwalter was discovered deceased in her home by family. The Dawes County Sheriff’s Office responded and called Haug to coordinate.

After a process similar to the earlier one – an investigation of the scene, consultation with witnesses and medical personnel, and a review of her medical history, Haug determined Ms Drinkwalter had also died of natural causes.
