Nebraska State Senator and Speaker of the Legislature Mike Hilgers of Lincoln is the first candidate to enter the race for attorney general, where incumbent Doug Peterson has decided not to seek a 3rd term.

A Republican, Hilgers made the announcement in Norfolk and focused his remarks on the party base, saying he will build on the great work of Peterson in fighting federal overreach.

Hilgers said “the Biden-Harris Administration has stretched beyond the law and our constitution,” and he’ll oppose such moves while standing with law enforcement, defending the constitution, and protecting our communities and families.

Hilgers enters the race with the endorsement of nearly the entire GOP hierarchy in Nebraska including Gov Pete Ricketts, Lt Gov Mike Foley, U-S Senator Deb Fischer, and Congressmen Adrian Smith and Don Bacon.

He also has the backing of former governors Kay Orr and Dave Heineman, and was introduced at his kickoff by two of his predecessors as Speaker, Mike Flood and Jim Scheer – both of Norfolk.

Hilgers has been an attorney in private practice for over 15 years with extensive courtroom experience. The firm he founded, Hilgers Graben, has been named one of the fastest growing companies in the country by Inc magazine.

Hilgers launched a statewide tour after his campaign kickoff in Norfolk and will be visiting media outlets Thursday in Chadron, Alliance, and Scottsbluff – among other places
