Valentine Man Arrested For Kilgore Murder

A Valentine man is in custody for murder following a disturbance early Tuesday morning in Kilgore that led to a roughly 12-hour search in Cherry County.

25-year old Kevin Kilmer is charged with 1st-degree murder and felony use of a weapon in the death of 52-year old Ruth Wittmuss.

The Cherry County Sheriff’s Office received the initial report from Kilgore and requested assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol, which went on to play a major role in the investigation.

A request for the public’s help, including photos of both Kilmer and Wittmuss, was made later Tuesday morning describing them as persons of interest.

The State Patrol says Kilmer was found in the afternoon, hiding in a wooded area. He was arrested and taken to the Valentine hospital to be checked out because of extreme temperatures.

While Kilmer was at the hospital, Wittmuss was found dead of an apparent homicide. Authorities have not said where the body was found or how Wittmuss was killed, only that the investigation is continuing.

When Kilmer was eventually cleared to leave the hospital, he was taken taken to the Cherry County Jail in Valentine on the murder and weapon charges.
