Woman Arrested After Giving Birth To Baby On Omaha Sidewalk And Wandering Off

Omaha authorities say a 27-year-old woman is in jail facing a felony child abuse charge after police said she gave birth to a boy on a city sidewalk Sunday morning and left the baby in freezing temperatures.

Trinity Shakespeare was taken into custody after being released from the Omaha hospital where both she and her son were taken. The infant is expected to survive.

Police say Shakespeare gave birth around 10 a.m. on a pile of blankets on the sidewalk in southeast Omaha with the temperature around 16 degrees and wind chills in the single digits.

Firefighters called to the scene found the newborn boy being attended by two passersby and took the baby to a hospital.

Witnesses told officials that after Shakespeare had given birth, she wrapped herself in a black coat and wandered off. Firefighters found her a short distance away and also took her to the hospital.
