Wrong-Way Driver Killed In I-80 Collision Near Chappell

The Nebraska State Patrol says a Gering man was killed early Thursday morning in a collision between a pickup and a semi on Interstate 80 near Chappell.

45-year old Kevin Thompson, driver of the pickup, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the semi was not seriously injured.

State Patrol spokesman Cody Thomas says investigators have determined that Thompson had entered the eastbound lanes of the freeway, but was driving westbound when he hit the semi about 2:30 AM.

Thomas says it’s not yet clear what caused Thompson to go in the wrong direction, so the investigation is continuing.
