Wyoming Pot Ballot Initiatives Face Uphill Battle But Backers Optimistic

Loading

Supporters of two new marijuana ballot petitions in Wyoming say they’re optimistic about getting their pot questions before voters next year, especially with growing support from conservatives in the deep-red state.

Organizers have submitted initiative proposals to decriminalize marijuana and legalize medical marijuana.

Even so, they face daunting odds because of the difficulty of getting such initiatives on the ballot, seen by the failure to get a pot measure to a vote 4 years ago.

Even getting a measure on the ballot is far short of guaranteeing approval by the voters. A ballot initiative hasn’t passed since 1992.

Wyoming is among a dwindling number of states that haven’t approved marijuana in some form.

36 states including South Dakota now allow medical marijuana and 17, again including South Dakota have approved recreational marijuana – although the South Dakota measure is awaiting State Supreme Court ruling.
